Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly

Evan Oberholster has opened his Clovelly studio to the public at both editions of Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly — the inaugural weekend in October 2025 and a much larger return in October 2026.

Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly invites the public into the homes and workspaces of artists across Cape Town’s Deep South, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creative process and the opportunity to buy original artwork directly from the artists.

October 2026: the biggest line-up yet

From Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October 2026, more than 40 artists at 20 locations across Fish Hoek and Clovelly opened their studios to the public — more than double the number who took part in the first edition, working across painting, sculpture, illustration, ceramics and mixed media.

Evan exhibited his figurative oil paintings and ceramic masks, alongside a selection of his earlier drawings and gouache paintings. He shared his home studio in Clovelly with Leora Lewis, a ceramic artist whose work moves between the functional and the fantastical.

October 2025: where it began

The inaugural Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly took place from 3 to 5 October 2025, with 19 artists opening their doors, Evan among them. A ticketed preview on Friday 3 October raised funds for Project Flamingo, followed by a free public weekend.

In the build-up to that first edition, the front windows of AP Jones — Fish Hoek’s beloved 97-year-old family-run department store — were transformed into a large-scale art installation, unveiled in phases from 19 September 2025. Organised by participating artists Lauren Shantall, Sue Kaplan and Yda Walt, and conceptualised by Walt and Kaplan, it combined layered screen-prints on calico — from proteas to passing trucks and Main Road shop signage — with mannequins dressed in printed paper and self-portraits by all 19 participating artists. The local press called it “a love letter to Fish Hoek”.
