The Finkelsteins Are Coming to Dinner

At the centre of The Finkelsteins Are Coming to Dinner is an artist at work — and the paintings he creates on stage are Evan Oberholster’s.

Throughout the play, Nate paints James — his model, his lover and, increasingly, the focus of his emotional world. The studio becomes a space in which both the paintings and the relationship between Nate and James take shape.

Created by Evan, the paintings seen in the production occupy a unique space between theatre and visual art. Within the world of the play they are Nate’s paintings. Outside the play they exist as independent works by Evan.

Opening Night

This relationship between fiction and reality continued beyond the stage in Opening Night, an accompanying exhibition that invited audiences to step into the artistic world of the play. The exhibition extended the experience of The Finkelsteins into the theatre foyer, where the paintings were encountered as artworks in their own right.
